MCS offers new after-school programs thanks to grant awarded to United Way of Northern NY

The United Way of NNY has been awarded a grant through the Office of Children and Family Services’ Learning and Enrichment Afterschool Program Supports (LEAPS) Initiative in collaboration with Morristown CSD. This grant allows the district to partner with United Way of Northern New York to offer after-school programs five days a week, with different club offerings each day.

Grade levels UPK-6 are able to participate in the “Green Rockets Rising” program, and 125 spots are open for students. Each morning, students are given breakfast and staff are available to help with homework. After school, a snack is offered and students embark on their chosen enrichment activity.

According to LEAPS, “Children who participate in quality after-school programs have improved attendance, grades, and work habits, and are less likely to repeat a grade and more likely to graduate.”

After-school programs being offered include: Walking Club, STEM Experiment Club, Crochet Club, Arts and Crafts, Dessert Club and a Homework/Latchkey Club. These clubs will rotate quarterly and the district will consider a new set of proposals each quarter.

Morristown is one of 238 schools nationwide to receive funding.
